《魔鬼的陷阱》是由知名导演法蘭提塞·維拉席 执导的一部劇情片,Vítezslav Vejrazka 米羅斯拉夫· 等倾情出演,该片讲述了: In the time of Counter-Reform ation, a mille r and his son come under invest igation by a priest of the Inquisition, when rumors s pread tha t their prosperity comes f rom wo rking with the Devil. The Dev il39;s T rap is a film directed by Františe k Vlá?il, based on a no vel by Alfréd Technik , adapted by Fra ntiše k A. Dvorák and Miloš Kratoc hvíl. It was the firs t of three h istorical dramas that Vlá?il made during the Czech New Wave (technically he isn';t really a part of the New Wave, howe ver these films were made d uring the same era of artistic freedom), preceding his more well known Marketa Laz arová (1967) and Valley of the Bees (1968). Set in the late 16 th C entury d uring the Catholic Refor mation, in the Morav ian Ka rst, si tuated in what is now the Ea stern Czech Republic, it tells the tale of a miller (Vítezslav Vejrazka), and his son Jan (Vít Olmer), who c ome under suspicion and are investigated by a Jesuit pries t of t he Inquisition (Miroslav Macháchek), wh en r umors of witc hcraft are sp read by the local regent (C estmír Rand a), who is jealou s of the miller's prosperity and degree of respect among the local popul ace. As ex pect ed from Vlá? il, this film is a stunning e xperience a ll the way t hrou gh. From the opening shot, an ominous manipulation o f perspectiv e with a close up of a mangled figure of Chris t dominating the foreg round against a tiny figure in b lack walking along the hori zon, to the breath taking co nfrontational final e inside the vast stalactite fill ed Karst caverns, it is a wonderful display of visual mastery. Maybe n ot quite a s impr essive as Marketa L azarová, but st ill full of astonishing imagery. As seen from uniq ue angles and dist inct points o f view which highlight the director's rem arkable sense of aware ness of fr aming, motion, and positioning on the emotional and drama tic tone of the sce ne. The most memorable being a repeated shot where t he cam era is suspended and laun ched with speed through t he air towards the miller 's door. The story here is a simple one and I would say more accessible tha n his later works. With a conventional structure emphasiz ed as much by its pl ot and c haracters, than by its expressioni stic ci nematograph y or auth entic historical detail. Th e events pl ay out without m uch surprise, and there is a strong underlyin g, almost superna tural, mysterious a spect th at is left unresolved, in fact barely expl ored, which is slightly disappointing, but only because it& #39;s so fas cinating that I wi sh there was more. Acting i s great all aro und. Particularly the v illains: Miroslav Mach áchek as the priest, casting a siniste r and i mposing shadow wherever he goes, and Cestmír Randa as t he wease l like regent behi nd all the persecution. While Vít Olmer brings a charismatic leading man presen ce in his role as the miller 9;s son Ja n, in l ove with the lovely orphan girl Martina ( Karla Chadimov á), wh o becomes a danger ous obj ect of riva lry between Jan and oth er young men of the village. The film also features t he evocative mus ic of Zden?k Liška (perhaps the mo st pr olific composer of the Czec h New Wave). In this his sec ond of e leven collab orations with Vlá?il, his composi tions are u sed sparingly, but to grea t effect, co mplimenting but never overpowerin g a s cene. The best exampl e of whic h ca n be heard in an amazingly shot celebration and dance sequenc e at the end of the second act. The Devil' s Trap might not be a masterpiece, but it is still a strong effort, wit h a fascinating straightforward story and a glo rious his tori cal setting captu red beautif ully by Vlá? il's unmistakable visual prow ess. A fine work that woul d also be the p erfect starter plate to prepare yourself for the challenging feast o f Marketa Lazar ová or The Va lley of the Be es. It even has an easy to d igest running time . It's therefor e puzzling why this gem remains lar gely ov erlooked and ignored.
