The case involved the murder and rape of a young woman, Mrs Joanna Fra nks, travel ing by cana l bo at from Coventry to L ondon. The case resu lted in thr ee boatmen being senten ced to death and two of them hanged. Mor se star ts to read Millie' s book an d dreams ab out it. He soon ha s a number of problems with the case. Why weren't the three men also charged with theft Why d id Mrs Frank s take a boat instead o f a train th at was much f aste r and comfortable and onl y slightly m ore expensive Why di dn't she aban don the boat after she compl ained about lewd behavior of the crew at the s hipping office in Banbury Why did she then drink and 'socialise' with the crew What happened to her 'carpet bag' with w hich she arrived on t he boat but which was not men tioned in the cou rt ca se, nor was it stored in the archives with her, almost empty, tru nk The tr unk was marked with i nitials of he r fir st hus band who had d ied. How did it happen that her shoes were found on t he boat but nobod y saw he r return t o the boat from the fores t PC Adrian Kershaw does some brilli ant leg work for Morse. He studied hist ory and has invaluable background knowl edge. For instance, he mentions t hat the boatmen ha d bad reputatio n because they wo rked on Sundays and did not atte nd chur ch. Later a chapel was built for them in Oxford. The dead woman's clothes and th e sh oes found on the boat are submitted to mode rn forensi c investig ation. The re sult is t hat the shoes did not belong to t he d ead woman found in the water because she was much taller.The shoes wer e never used in the forest. On ly Mrs Franks' hu sband, Charl es Franks , was called to identif y the body of th e dead woman. He claimed that, whil e her fac e was darke ned and dis figured, he found a birth m ark behind her ear. The prosecutor wel comed that information that only a husband or a lover w ould know. The accused were n ot shown the body . The defense attorney merel y claimed that the gu ilt o f the t hree men was not p roved. A ll three acc used claimed to the end that they were innoc ent. One of them was not executed bec ause he embraced Christian ity in pri son. Morse instructs Kershaw to inves tigate if Charles Franks ben efited fro m his wife's death and, ind eed, he po cketed 300 poun ds in surance money. If Joanna Franks jumped o ff the boat at the same t ime as the dead body hit the water, she swam to the bank and joined her husband. The couple changed thei r names, in the case o f 'Char les Franks' a second ti me after he 'd ied' as Joann a's first husba nd. The f ourth boatman, a youngster who was no t char ged, w as probably paid by Joanna to give false testimony. Morse t ravels to Ireland and has a grave o f Joanna's first husband exhumed.
