Paul, who had once been Norm a's lover, has convinced Ba rbara that Norma actually wants Paul for herself and has only ma rried her f ather Stephe n for h is money. At Mac's urging, Norm a tried to r eason wit h Paul, but he insis ts that he loves Ba rbara and laughs her off. Bar bara is eq ually disdainful of her and agrees to meet Paul for dinner that ni ght at his apartm ent. Norma's husban d Stephen La wry is a scien tist leavin g that night on a trip to test a secret in vention on which he has been working for the government and the war effort. Worried about Barbar a, she uses a prete xt not to accompany Stephen and goes to the apartment. When B arbar a arri ves, she finds Paul's dead body and thin ks that Norma h as kille d hi m, even though Norma ins ists th at he wa s dead when she arr ived. Barbara threatens to call the police unless she leaves Stephen. Fearing that a scandal will h urt him, Norma agrees. Norma then turns to M ac, who go es to Paul's apartment with Friday a nd Marty, on ly to fi nd the bo dy and the rug under it missing. A man arr ives to replace the rug and Mac hid es in a closet , overhearing a telephone call to Norma's n umber from &qu ot;Gabriel &quo t; to "Vera.& quot; Mac accident ally gives hims elf away, but with Friday 's help overpowers Gabriel, who refuses to talk. Mac has Marty hide him to keep him under wraps. No rma returns to her country home unexpectedly, which disco urages an e spionage ring t hat includes her butler, Hansen, fr om br eaking into Stephen' ;s safe a nd stealing his plans. They h ave k illed Geren te, who was also an agent, and hidden the body. Mac arriv es with Fr iday at Norm a's house and p retends to be her c urmudgeonly "Un cle Mac" who has come for a visit. His blin dness lulls any suspicions Hansen m ight have about him. Shortly thereafter , Barbara c omes home from an "emergency rehearsa l", calle d to get her out of the hous e by he r director, Cheli Scott, who inve igles an i nvitation to spend t he night at the Lawry home. Unk nown to Barbara and Norma, Cheli i s the rin gleader of the spies. Cheli ordered P aul killed b ecaus e his affection for Barba ra was beginning to limi t his e ffectiveness, a nd she immed iately suspects Mac is not what h e seems. Gabriel's wif e Vera, the Lawrys' maid, is also a part of the plo t. When Gabriel does not return home, Vera becom es hysterical with worry. Mac secr etly asks Vera to meet him in the greenhouse, using her worry about Gabriel as a lure. She is observed by the ot hers, however, and is killed by Hansen bef ore she can reach Mac. The spies cut the house&# 39;s telephone wires so that Mac and No rma cannot call the police, a nd Cheli has Mac locked up under guard. U sing his blind ness as a distrac tion, M ac overpowe rs his guard and releases Friday out a window with instructions to &q uot;go hom e an d get Marty.&quo t; Stephen arrives home and Cheli threa tens his family if he does not giv e her the final step in creating his inve ntion, which was no t in the safe. Barbara fina lly realizes how much Norma actually cares for her. Mac tries to stall for time, bu t is locked in the cellar. When Hanse n goes to kill him, Mac has br oken the light bulb and his advantage of total darkn ess helps h im overc ome t he spy. Marty and Friday return with t he police. When Friday is spot ted by a l ookout, Ma c overpo wers him and is saved from being shot by another l ooko ut by F riday. A fter the spi es are captu red, Stephe n and No rma are off to Washing ton, D.C., with Barbara rem aining behind to care for her new "Uncle Mac.
