Mea nwhile, Huck unexpectedly stumbles upon so meone he knows very well. "Countess Scha rwenka& quot;, a temperam ental custo mer at Robert a9;s, turns out to be his hometown swe ethea rt Lizzie Gatz (Ginger Rogers). She gets Huck's band an engage ment at the nightclub where she is a fea tured entertainer . Two t hings trouble John. One is Lad islaw (Victor Va rconi), the handsome Russian deposed prince and doorman who seems too interested in Stephan ie. The oth er is the memory of Sophie (Claire Dodd), the sno bbish, conceited girlfriend he left b ehind after a quarre l over his lack of sophistication and polish. When Aunt M innie dies unexpectedl y without l eaving a will, John inherits the shop. Knowin g nothing about women's fashion and that his aunt inte nded for Stephanie to i nherit the business, he persuades Stephanie to remain as h is partner. Correspondents flock to hear what a football player has to say about fe minine fashions. Hu ck g ives th e answers, making a lot of weird statements about the innovati ons John is planning to introduce. So phie arrive s in Pa ris, attracted by John9;s good fortune . She enters the shop, looking for a dres s, but is d issatisfied with everything Stephanie s hows her. Huck persuades h er to choos e a gown that John had ordered d iscarded a s too vulga r. When John sees her i n it, they quarrel for the final time. John reproaches Stephani e for selling Sophi e the gown. Terribly hurt, Ste phanie quits the sh op. Wit h Robe rta 9;s putting on a fashion show in a week, Hu ck takes over the design work, with pre dictably bad resu lts. When S tephanie sees hi s awful creations, she is p ersuaded t o ret urn to save Roberta';s reputatio n. The show is a tr iumph, helped by the ent ertaining of Huck, Countess S charwenka, and the band. (A pr e-stard om Lucille B all, with platinum blond hair, appears uncredited in her first RKO film[4] as a model wearing an elaborate feather cape, afte r the voca l by Dunne, i n the fash ion show.[ 5]) Th e clos ing sensation is a gown modeled by Steph anie herself. At the show , John ov erhears th at she and Ladislaw are leaving Paris and mistakenly a ssumes that they hav e married. Later, he congr atulates her for becoming a pri ncess. When she in forms him t hat Ladis law is merely her cousin and that the title has been h ers since birth, th e lovers are reuni ted.
