S ince it was Hammond's turn to select the challenge location , the team w ent to t he Western United States. Jeremy selected the Lexus LFA, James chose the new Aston M artin Vanquish, and Richard took the SRT Viper. After a brief drive in the Nevada dese rt, th e trio hea ded to Las V egas Motor Speedway, specifically the drag stri p, to co mpete in drag ra ces organiz ed b y the Las Vegas P olice Departm ent; whom organized it with the theo ry that allowing people to drag race, legal ly, at a c losed circuit, would prev ent street racin g. Despite the high perform ance of their cars, the trio were beaten by modified production cars, and 4WD cars , in each of their drag races. Ne ws: Jer emy co mes up with a solution on how to solve the crisis affecting Britain& #39;s town centres: sacking all traff ic wardens a nd removing doubl e yellow lines. The trio then revi ew a Chinese product designed to s top dr owsiness behind the wheel, b efore they too k a fi rst l ook at th e 2013 Jaguar F-Type. Challenge, Part 3: Depart ing Willow Springs, the group headed for Los Ang eles, Califo rnia. In or der to do &qu ot;real wor ld" te sting, Ric hard devised a cha llenge to see who could burn the b est elevens. The three inst ead ended up draw ing a phallu s and left LA. The team then stayed for a n ight in Palm S prings. However, the producers gave t hem a final challenge. T he th ree would drive fro m Palm Spring s to the Me xican border at Calexico the f ollowing morning, and the last to make it t o the Mexica n border would have to trav el into the country itself to drive the Mastret ta MXT, a Mexican sports car made fu n of b y the presenters in an earlier serie s, for a later segment on th e show. Challenge, Part 1: The producers h ave reserve d a single tick et to a football mat ch at the San Siro in Milan, Northern It aly. The trio have a rac e from Wembley S tadium to th e San Siro. Jeremy drives the Shelby Mustang GT5 00 and Richard and James travel on public tra nsport. Simila r to the pr evious race to Monte Ca rlo, Ri chard and James ar e not allowe d to use an y cars, and Jeremy is not allowed to use any trains. Richa rd and James opened up a big lead whilst travelli ng on t he E urostar, and arrive in Paris while Jeremy was still crossing the E nglish Ch anne l on a ferry. Aft er leaving Paris, Richard and J ames disc uss what to do u pon arriving in Milan — as there are two of th em but only one ticket. Jeremy beg an t o catch up and wa s nearly neck and neck with the train, unt il road work s at the Mont Blanc Tunnel slow him down. The train starts to accele rate agai n and re aches Northern Ital y ahea d of Jeremy. Richard and James us e a tub e network to get to the str eets n ear the fin ish line. James maintai ns his opposition to run on television and Richard runs off alone to find the finish line, w hich is at a bar in the IM Villa Veuve C liequot. James t hen assemb led a bike which he ha d hidden in one of his bags and ride s to the bar, only to find that Richard is a lready th ere and has won the race and the ticket to the football match. The Stig did laps of eac h car, the Focus being th e slowest a t 1:29.6, the Astra VX R at 1:28.3, and t he Megane in 1:27.7. Des pite this, Jeremy chose the Astra VXR as the best overall car of the three. News: They dis cuss t he newest cars, such as the Alfa R omeo 4C, th e next gen eration Ford Mustang w ould be sold in Great B ritain, but the UK version would come with a 2.0 EcoBoost engin e, a nd the importanc e of the han dbrake t urn in & quot;male development". Jer emy's team wins. 152 Series 19, Episode 5 24 F ebruary 2013 James Mc Avoy Challeng e, Part 1: Jeremy and Richard attem pt to design a car targeted at elderly people. Je remy demonstrates the complexity of modern cars ' dshboard. Richard brings a Fiat M ultipla and bo th modify it. Jer emy breaks the dashboard and rep laces it considering it t o be too complicated for eld ers. R ichard asks for th e airb ags saying that it is danger ous for the elderly who are as delicat e as children, and that he needs it for a safety feat ure. Jeremy ma kes a speed ometer which reads 20 mp h at t he top s peed , he also uses an old de sign switch for rear fog l ight which does n othing . Jeremy install s a pet-cage and replaces the back seat with hi gh seat chairs and the Fiat badge with a Rover one. They paint it in beige after observing the shade of a heari ng aid. Richard uses water-re sistant f abric as seat covers, and while sti tching hurt s his eye. They comp lete the car and end the part 1 wi th Richard wearing heav y band ages o ver his left eye. News: Volks wagen will launch GTI versi on of the ne w Golf and GT v ersion of U p will be launched. Kia will launch the Pro Cee& #39;d GT. The Mini Paceman i s launched, and the trio mock the front end of the car, claiming th at it looks depressin g. The trio agr ee tha t the Bri tish are the best drivers. Alfa-Romeo rel eases pho tograp hs of the Gloria, in which the trio make fun of it 9;s name. Richard had arrived late so J ames and J eremy had at tempted to play tennis with cars (whic h has a lot of editing). Revi ew: James reviews t he new Rang e Rover in Londo n. The new car is completely redes igned, 400 kg lighter due to Aluminiu m body, has active suspension, new gea rbox, minima list dashboard and offers better comfort. James then races it a gain st TerraMax at Nevada Automotive Test Centre, Nevada. The race was to a hil l 10 mile across, p assing through rocky terrain, hillock , mud, river and sand-tracks. Te rraMax was switched to drone mode during the ra ce to deflate the tyres an d take a short-cut. The Range Rover's automatic Terrain Response Sys tem is demon strat ed. James t akes a lon ger route to ascen d the hill but still wins the race. At the st udio, the trio c onsider the driverles s cars to be not very pract ical. St ar In A Rea sonably Pric ed Car: James McAvoy drove the Kia Cee 9;d around the T est Tr ack with a lap of 1:43.6 despite having less experienc e of drivi ng cars. He dro ve over grassy patch in the last corn er but manages to k eep the car under control. Chall enge, P art 2: Je remy and Richard road- test their car a t Christchurch, Dorset. Th e car has large front bu mpers made up of foam, large rear-view mirrors , sq ueakin g ball under the brak e-pe dal, large magnifying-glas s on the dashboard, s at nav (voiced by Ric hard Brier s) with on ly four desti natons . The c ar has an artifici al cat on the roof whic h later fell over on th e way of Bingo hall . Richard later sho ws his system to find the l ocation of park ed car (the ca r acti vates a fla re and then rele ases a ball oon). Jeremy shows that the radio only plays Horse of th e Year Show theme on a loop, which both late r find to be i rresistible to clap alo ng. The name of t he car is reveal ed to be The James . They pick up three elder ly ladies f rom a pens ioners' home fo r road-testi ng and drive them to a bowling club where it is shown that Richa rd fit ted the airbag at the rear for pa rking assi st which inflates the air bag on close proximity . Jer emy and Richard buy food for p icnic, choosing only British fo ods. T hey attac h the shopping tro lley to Tow hitch an d head fo r picnic. The roof of t he c ar leaks as it rains. Jerem y and Richa rd end up choos ing a picnic spot on roadside where they f ind the trolley to be damag ed dur ing rev ersing and the food to be soaked, however the y ate the fo od which was not ruined. The next day both leave Christchurch and Jeremy shows his system to prevent the car from being driven on the wrong side of the road, the car initial ly sounds alarm and late r the tyres, doors and other parts of the car expl ode which stops the car an d renders it immobile. At the st udio, James cons iders the heat er to be comp licated, the trio thank Ri chard Brier s an d announce t he Afric a sp ecial. 153 Series 19, Episode 6 3 March 2013 No Guest First of the two-episode Africa Special, tak ing place in Africa. The episode was shot in 2012. Challen ge, Part 1: Buy u sed estate cars for up to £ 1,500 in Britain and repo rt at a small villag e in r ural Uganda. Jeremy arriv es in a BMW 528i Touring, Richard in a Subaru Impreza W RX Estat e and James in a Volv o 850R Wagon. The challenge is to find the true source of the river N ile. They set o ff an discover that ex ploring isn' t as di fficult as first thou ght wh en they go on a nice e asy dri ve a nd find La ke Victoria, of whom the V icto rian Exp lorers thoug ht was th e source of the Nile. However they are then tol d that it is not the actua l sour ce of the Nile and there were two other disputed locatio ns for it, one in Rwanda an d one in Burundi. Howev er, Jeremy Clarkson insisted that both of the se location s were wrong and decided t o head west towards Lake Edward to see whether there was a link between that lake and Lake Kivu in Rwanda. In their jour ney west, where they visit the Entebbe Airport and fro m ther e see the Fo rd Scor pio Estate bac k-up car. They continue into Ka mpala, Ugan da's Capital City wher e the y get held up in a tr affic jam overnight, the most hurrendous traffic th ey';d ev er seen. They continue on well -maintaine d highwa ys west finding their trip incredibly easy befor e reaching the town of Mbarara in the s outhwest of the country , via a stop in Jezza, a village in Mpigi District. Here the y stay i n a dis gusting hote l, after driving t hrough tea plantations in an attempt to discover a lovely tea house hotel, which in the mind of Richard , was bound to found due to tea programme s he'd seen. In Mbarara they stayed in the Economic Lodge w ith Jer emy havin g a bed with faec es on it. They left the ho tel di sgusted before Ri chard ha s the i dea to make the cars 9;hotels9;. James mo difies his Volvo b y adding a li brar y, R ichard adds a cooke r and Jeremy adds a cof fin. The coffin he use s to put his clothes in, he sleeps on Egy ptian Cot ton. Th ey leave for Lake Edwar d, camping overnight there be cause of its beauty before hea ding in s earch of th e rive r head ing for Lake Kivu. Non e of the rivers co nnec t the lake as th ey a ll head east rather t han south. They give up , leaving them disappo inted. Then Jeremy looks at a map and discovers the s ource of the Nile must be on the other side of Lake Victoria. His reasoning i s that the Mediterranean Sea is effectively an inland sea and so Gib raltar is the true mouth of the Nile, rathe r than Alexa ndria in E gypt. After discovering this they decide that they mus t drive straig ht to t he oth er side of Lake Victo ria to get to the southeast coast in T anzania near the Sereng eti.
