I t' ;s such a t  hrill to now  be playing one o f his brilliant char acters.　　&q uot;Dirk is a ch  aotic, anarchic force  of natu re with a t otally unique take on the world. He is desc ribe d as 'lazy, u  ntidy, dismissive and unreli able'. I';ve absolutely no idea why they thought I';d be r ight fo r the  role."  ;　　The Dirk Gently books h ave fo rmed the ba sis of a play   and a BBC Radio 4 series but ha ve never before  been  filmed for  TV.　　Adams 's agent, Ed Victor, said: "Fo r al l the years I repres ented the  late, great  Douglas A dams, the most substantial frustration fo r both of us was that we couldn' ;t g et film s mad e either o f Hitchhiker or  Dirk.　　" ;Douglas o nce said, mem orably, that  'gettin g a film mad e in Hollywood was like  trying  to co ok a steak  by h aving a bunc  h of  people come into  the room and breathe on it'. Well, we did eventually get a film mad e in Hollywood of Hitchhiker and, tragically,  Douglas didn't live to   see it.
