《丹麥小村教堂》是由知名导演卡爾·西奧多·德萊葉 执导的一部劇情片，Ib Koch-Olsen 等倾情出演，该片讲述了：　　The history of Danish country church architecture i s told  by showing  scenes  of how th e church was used by the congr egatio n, begi nning with the celebrati on of mass in a small and simple wo  oden church  800 years ago, and endi ng with t  he congregation si nging in a village church  of to-day. The develo pment and the growth of t he pattern  of church ar chit ecture i s show n.　　Dreyer in this  film shows a  series of churches  from  different p eriods with churchg oers in peri  od clothing. Each p eriod is separated  by a shot o f a church  bell double-expose d on the sky. Although th  e film has a  vibrant and instr  uctive way  of communicating the different epochs an d styles  to students, it does not exhibit th e arti stic quali ty t hat usually distinguis hes a Dreyer film, e xcept pe rhaps in some of the   costumes, which were originally mad e for Day of Wrath.　　The board of Dansk Kulturfilm in autumn 1945 d ecided that  their pl anned church film would  exclu sively be a  bout vi llage churches. Drey er would rework the script  that was written by editor a nd folk high-school principa l Bernhard Jensen, aided  by a  commi ttee of experts c onsi sting of architect H. Lø nborg-Jensen  and Victo r Hermansen,   curator at the  National Museum of Denmark . Dreyer had a  firs t draft ready in mid-Ma rch,  entitl  ed Kirken er et gam melt  Hus ("The Church  Is an Ol d House"  ;), which  was distributed to the m embers of the com mittee for their comments.　　In the last half of Jul y, Dre yer and Victor Hermansen travelled the c ountry to  look at suitable chu rches. They researched the details and at Dreyer’ s request a  number of technical changes were made to the churc hes, incl  uding the  removal o f porce lain ho  lder s for electrical wi ring in Tvej e Merløse Church.　　On 4 July, Dreyer went in adva nce to Ringkøbing. Sh ooting was set to start  a few days  later with the arrival of the directo r of photography, Preben Frank, who had fallen of f a lad der and  broken   his le g, F ortunatel y, he was  ready to cautiously sta rt working a gain wit hin a few days, with his leg i n a c ast. 　　Otherwise, the produ ction went wit hout a glitch. Everywhere, Dreyer s aid, they were well received at the vicara ges an d they had no prob lem getting enough ex tras. On 1 augus t, they  returned   to Copenhagen with almost all the ir f ootage in t he can. The y only needed to fi lm the church in Skelby , where t he weath er had been against   them, plus a Swedish wooden chur  ch in Heda red. The economy was distressed so soon after  the war,  especially when it came to foreign currency, but th ere were n o real wooden  churches le ft in Denmark and bui ldin g an in  terior s et in the studio would be too expensive. 　　The fi nished film was s hown for the first time on 24 Septem ber 19 47 to a small, closed  circle, which included the  Ministe r for Ecclesiastical Affairs.
