E ach period is se parated by a shot of a church bell double-exposed on the sky. Althou gh the film has a vibrant and instructive way of com municating the diffe rent epochs and sty les to students, it does not ex hibit the a rtistic quality that usua lly distinguishes a Drey er film, except perhaps in s ome of the cos tumes, which were originally made for Day of Wrath . The board of Dansk Kulturfilm in aut umn 1945 decide d that their planned chur ch film woul d exc lusively be about village churches. Dreyer would rework the script that was writte n by editor and folk high -school principal Bernhard Jen sen, aided by a committee of expert s consisting of architect H. Lønborg-Jens en and Vic tor H ermansen , curator a t the National Museum of De nmark. Dr eyer had a first draft ready in mid-March, entitled Ki rken er et gamme lt Hus ("The Church Is an Old House"), which was di stributed to the membe rs of the committee f or their comments. In the last half of Ju ly, Dreyer and Victor Hermansen travelled the country to look at suitable churches. They research ed the detai ls and at D reyer’s request a number of technical chan ges were made to the churches, including the removal o f porcelain holders for electrical wir ing in Tveje Merlø se Chu rch. On 4 July, Dr eyer went in ad vance t o Ringk øbing. Shooting was s et to st art a few days later with the arrival of the dir ector of photog raphy , Preben Frank, wh o had fallen o ff a ladder and broken his le g, Fortunately, he was r eady t o cauti ously sta rt working aga in wi thin a few days, with his le g in a cast. Other wise, the producti on went w ithout a glitch. Everyw here, Dreyer said, th ey were well re ceived at the vicarag es and th ey had no problem getting enough extras . On 1 aug ust, they returned t o Copenhagen with almost all their f ootag e in the can. They only needed to film the ch urch in S kelby, where the wea ther had been against them, plus a Swedish wooden chu rch in Hedared. The econom y was distr essed so soon after the war, especia lly when it came t o for eign currency, but there were no real woode n churches left in De nmark and building an in terior set in the studio would be too expensive. The finished film was sho wn for the firs t time on 24 September 1947 to a s mall, clos ed circle, which included the M inister for Ecclesias tical Affairs.
