At first  feted and l  ater reject ed by  bourgeoi s society, Baal roam s through forests  and al  ong motorways, gr eedy for s chnapps, cig arettes, women and men: ‘You have to let o  ut the  bea st, let h  im out into the sunlight.’ After impregnati  ng a y oung actres s he s oon comes t o regard her as a  millstone round his nec k. He stabs  a friend  to death and dies a  lone. ‘Y ou are u seless, mangy   and wild,  you beas t, you cr awl through the l owest boug  hs of the tree.’　  　The film takes youthful imp etuousne ss and hat red of o ppression a s its subject and also po nders the cult of genius and sexual  morals. Rainer We  rner Fassbinder sim ultaneously p lays both Baal a nd himself and is surro unded by many actors  who were lat  er to perf orm in his own films.
