《奇愛疑雲》是由知名导演劉易斯·邁爾斯通 执导的一部劇情片，芭芭拉·斯坦威克 凡·赫夫林 柯克·道格拉斯 等倾情出演，该片讲述了：　　On a rainy  night in 1928 in a Pennsylva nia fac tory town call  ed Ivers town, Martha Ivers ( Janis Wilson), thirteen ye  ars old, is trying to escape from the g uardianship of her wealthy, dominee ring aunt. Her friend, the street -smart , poor Sam  Master son (Darry l Hickman), co mes for h er through her bedroom w indow, but Martha 9;s aunt catc hes the m. Wh  ile Sam slips out unnoticed, Martha hits Mrs. Ivers on the head,   causing her  to fall  down the lon g st aircase  and die . Though Sam saw no thing, the event was  witnessed by W alter O' ;Neil (Mickey Ku hn), the so n of Martha's tu tor (Roman Bo hnen),   known as Mr. O'N eil. Martha lies about the incident to Mr. O'Neil, and Walter s upports he r.[5]　　 Mr. O 9;Neil suspe cts wha t happened but p resents Martha's vers ion o f events t o the police, that an intruder is re spons ible; he makes use of his   knowledge  by having her marry his son.  When the police identify  a former employee of the aunt as t he murdere r, the two   O'Neils and Martha  hel  p convict him; he is pun ished  by hanging. [5]　 　Eighteen ye ars lat  er, the  older O' ;Neil h as died. Walter (no w played by K irk Douglas) is th e distr ict attorney, whil e Martha (B arbara Stanwyck) h as used her inher itance from her  aunt to    build  a large busin ess empire. Their marriage is o  ne-sided; he loves her  , but she  does not love hi m.　　Sam (Van Heflin), now a drifte r and ga mbler, stops in the small town by chan  ce to hav e his car repaire d after an accident. Whi le waiting for re  pairs, at his old home, now a boarding house, he meets Antonia  "Toni" ; Marachek  (Lizabeth Scott), who has just be en released from jail. S he is later picked up for violating  her p robat ion b y not re turning to h   er hometown. Sam go es to see Walter, to see if he  can use hi s influence to get her rele ased.　　Walter  is convinced Sam has returned  with blackmail in mind, giving  Walt er a motive t o run Sam o ut of town. When Martha reacts with joy to the  news of Sam's re turn, Walter';s je alousy provides an ad diti onal motive. Walter for ces T oni to set Sam up. Sam is beaten and d riven out of tow n, but he is t oo tough to be intim idated. Whe n all else fails,  Walter makes a half-hearted attempt  to kill Sam himself, but is easi ly d isarmed. Ma rtha the n inadvert ently blu rts out the couple's fears of bl ackmail, which prove to be ground less: Sam s  ays he did not witness th e death. Martha breaks down and lam ents that he left witho ut he r all those year  s ago, taking with him he r only c hance for love and fre edom.　　Sam is torn between his old love and his new. Although he e ventual  ly forg  ives Toni  for betraying him, he a nd Martha spend an idy llic day t ogether, rekindling his feelings for he r.　　Walter arranges to meet  Sam to fin ally s ettle matters. Befor e Sam arrives, Walte r gets drunk and  Martha f inds out ab out the meet ing. When Walte  r falls down the s tairs and is  knocked uncons cious, M artha urges Sam  to kill him. Sam inst ead brings Walter around. Martha p ulls out a  gun and threatens t o shoot Sam in &quo t;sel f defense" as an intr uder. However, Sam gambles t hat Walter  will not  back up her story; he  turns  his back on her and  leaves.　　Walter embra ces and kisses h is wife;  then he poi nts t he gun at   her mid riff. Oddly reliev  ed,  she put  s her hand over his hand on the trigger and  presses. A s she  is dying, she defia ntly state s her name  is not Martha Ivers, but  Martha Sm ith. Outside, Sam h ears the shot. He runs back toward the mansion, but   sees Walter,  holding Ma rtha 9;s body, s  hoot himself.
