《奇愛疑雲》是由知名导演劉易斯·邁爾斯通 执导的一部劇情片，芭芭拉·斯坦威克 凡·赫夫林 柯克·道格拉斯 等倾情出演，该片讲述了：　　On a rainy night in 1928 in a Pennsylvania fac tory  town call ed Iver stown, Martha I vers (Janis Wi lson ), t hirte en year s old, is trying to e scape  from th e guardianship of her wealthy, d omineering aunt. Her friend,  the street-sm art, poor Sam Masterson (Darryl Hickman)  , comes for her through her bedroom window, but Martha&# 39;s aunt c atches th em. W hile  Sam slip   s out unnot iced,  Martha hits Mrs. Ivers  on t he head, causing her to fall down the long staircase and die. Though Sam  saw nothi ng, the even t was witnessed by Walter O 'Neil (Mickey Kuhn), the son of Martha' ;s tutor ( Roman Bohnen) , known as M r. O'N eil. Ma rtha lies about the incident to Mr. O& #39;Neil, an d Walt er supports her.[5]　　Mr.  O'N  eil suspects what happened but p resents Martha& #39;s version of event s to the police, that an intruder is responsible; he makes use of his knowledge  by having her marry his son. When the police identi fy a former employee of the aunt as the murderer , the two O'Neils an d Martha help convi ct him; he is punished by hangin g.[5]　 　Eighteen y ears late r, the older O'Nei l has died. Walter (now played by Kirk Douglas) i  s the  distr ict atto rney, w hile Martha  (Barbara Sta nwyck) has used h er inheritan ce from her aunt to build a large business empire . Their marriage is one -sided; he loves her, but she does not  love him.　　Sam (V an Heflin), now a drifter and gambler, stops i n the small town by chance  to have his car repaire d after an  accident. W hile waitin  g for repair s, at his old home, now  a boarding h ouse, he m eets Antonia "  ;Toni "; Marac hek (  Lizabeth Scott),  who has just bee  n release d from jail . She is later picked up for violating her probation  by not  returning to her hometown. Sam goes to see Walte r, to see if he ca n use his influence to get her r  eleased.　　Walt  er is convinced Sam has retur  ned with bl ackmail in mind, givi ng Walter  a motive to run Sam out of town. Whe n Mar tha reacts with joy to the news o f Sam's return, Walter's jealousy provides an additional  moti ve. Walter forces Toni to set Sam up. Sam  is beate  n and drive n out of town, but he is too toug h to be in timid ated. When all else fails, Walter makes a half-he arted attempt to ki ll Sam himself, but is easily di sarmed. Ma rtha then inadvert  ently blurts out the couple9;s fears of blackma il, which prove to be groundless: Sam says he did  not witness   the death. Martha breaks down  and lame nts that he  left  without her all those years ago, taking with him her only chan ce f or love and freedom.　　Sam is torn between his old   love and his new. Although he eventually forgives Toni for betraying him, he  and Mar tha spend an idy llic day togethe r, r ekindling his feelings for her.　　Walter arra  nges t o meet Sam to finally settle matters. Before Sam arrives, Walter   gets drunk  and Martha fin ds out about the meet ing. When Walt er falls d own the stairs  and is knocked  unconscious , Martha urges Sam to kill h im. Sam inste ad brings W alter  around . Martha pulls out a gun and threatens  to sh oot Sam in  "self defense"  as an  intruder. However, Sam gambles that Wa lter will n ot back up her   story; he tu rns his bac k on her a nd le  aves.　　Walt er embrac es and kisses hi s wife; then he points the gun at her midriff. Oddly  relieved, she p uts her hand ove r his h  and o  n the tri  gger and presses. As she is dying, she de  fiantly st ates her name is not Ma rtha Ivers , but Martha Smit h. Outside, Sam hears  the sho t. He r uns back tow ard the mansion, but sees Walter , holding Martha&# 39;s body, shoot himself.
