The play itself  is a loose retelling of the biblical story of  King Hero d and his execution o f John the Baptist (here,  as in Wilde's play, ca  lled Jokaana n) at the r equest of his stepdaug hter, Salomé, whom he lusts   after. 　　Salomé is  often called one of t he first art films to be made in the U.S.[citation  need  ed] The highly stylized costumes, e xaggerated acting (even for the pe riod ), minimal sets, and absence of all but  the most necessary pro ps make for a screen imag e much more focu  sed o n atmosphere and   on c onveying a sense   of the characte rs' individual hei ghtened desire  s th an o n co  nventional  plot development.　　Despite the  film being only a l ittle over an  hour in le ngth and having no real  action to  speak of, it c ost  over  $350,000 to make. All the  sets were co nstructed indoors  to be able  to have com plete c  ontrol over t he lighting. The film  was shot completely in  black and  whit e, matching the i llustrations done by  Aubrey  Beardsley  in the printed edi tion    of Wilde 9;s play. The costumes, desi gned by Nat acha R ambova , us ed ma terial only from Mai son Lewis of Paris,  such as the real silver lamé loincloths worn by the guards.　　No majo r studio wo uld be associated  with the film,  and it was years after its comp letion before it was released, by a minor independen t dis tributor. It  was a  complete  failure  at the time and m  arked  the end of N azimova's pr oducing career.　　A longstandin g rumor, which seems to   have started whi  le the film  was still in pr oduction, suggests tha t its cast is comprised e ntirely of gay and b  isexual act ors in  an hom age to Osca r Wilde,  as per s tar and producer Nazimova 9;s demand. It is, of  course, impossible  to say, but one of the extras in Salom é reported  that a number of the cast members—both  featured  and extras—were indeed ga  y, but not an unu sual  percentag e of  them, and certainly not all of them.
