Salo mé is often called o ne of the first a rt fi lms to be ma de in the U.S.[citation needed ] The highly styl ized c ostumes, e xaggerated acting (even for the period) , minimal sets, an d absenc e of all but t he mos t nece ssary props make for a screen image much more focu sed on a tmosphere an d on conv eying a sense of the characters' individual heighten ed desires than on conve ntional plot d evelopment. Despite th e film being only a lit tle over an hour in length and having no real a ction to spe ak of, it cost over $350,000 to make. All th e sets were constructed in door s to be able to ha ve comple te control o ver the lighting. The film was sh ot comple tely in black and white, matching the illustr ations done by Aubre y Beardsley in t he printed edi tion of Wilde9;s play. The costumes, designed by Natacha Rambov a, used mate rial only f rom Mais on Lewis of Paris, such as the real silver lamé loincloths worn by the gu ards. No major studio would be ass ociate d with the film, and it was years after its completion before it was released, by a mi nor independent dis tributor. It was a complete fa ilure at the time and marked the end of Naz imova9;s p roducing car eer. A longstanding rum or, which seems to have starte d while t he film was still in production, suggests t hat its cast is comprised entirely of ga y and bisex ual actors in an homag e to Oscar Wilde, as per star and producer Nazimova' ;s demand. It is, of course, impossible to say , but one of the extras in Salomé reported that a number o f the cast m embe rs—both featured and extras—were inde ed gay, but not an unusual p ercentage of the m, and certainly not al l of them. What can be said is that Nazimova h erself was a les bian, the two guard cha racters (who, next to Salomé, ha ve the most screen time) are at lea st played very stereotyp ically gay, and s ever al of the female courtiers a re men in drag. Salom é was screened in 1989 at the New Yor k International Fes tival of Lesbian and Gay films and in 1990 at the New York Gay E xperimental Film Festival.
