Finally, th e ship grounds itself ne ar an inhabi ted tropi cal isl and and springs a l eak. While Rollo dons a deep s ea diving suit an d submerges to patch t he hole, th e black nat ives canoe out an d take Bets y captive. When Rol lo emerges from t he ocean, the natives are scared off, e nabling him to re scue Betsy and take her back to the ship. The nat ives ret urn an d try to board the ship. Afte r a fierce struggl e, R ollo and B etsy try to escape i n a small dingh y. It starts to sink, and the natives swiftly o vertak e them in their canoe s.
