Bu t one of the key things to the interest in the film is 27 yea r old Robert De Niro (not his first or la st film with the direc tor), who plays this character who sits i n a room lo okin g out thro ugh his telescope at women in th eir rooms, setting up phony deals, and in the end basically throw ing bombs. Those who have said that De Niro can't act and just is hi mself in ever y movie shou ld see this movie, if only out of some mi nor curiosity. A couple of times in the film it&# 39;s actually not fun ny, as wh en there& #39;s a disturbance in a black-power meeting (filmed in a grai ner, rougher style than the rest of the fil m). In the end it& #39;s capp ed off wi th a rambling monologue i n an i ntervie w th at tops De Niro9;s in King of Comed y. It's prett y obvious w here De Palma's career wou ld go after this, into sl ightly more ma instream Hollywood territory, but all of his trademar ks are here; the dark, almost nail-biting comedy, the perf ectl y timed st yle of voyeurism, an d interes ting usage of locals. Think if De P alma and De Niro did a Monty Python film, only even more low-budget and in i ts New Yor k way just as off-t he-hinges, and you got Hi, M om!
