At the same time this story describes the di sintegra tion of social rela tionships and the growing s eparation of a socie ty whose aristocratic elite spre ads the models of va nity and idl eness. This poetic love story follows a nouv eau riche merchant, Stanislaw Woku lski, through a se ries of tri als and trib ulations occasioned by his obse ssive p assion for a n aristocratic beauty, Izabe la Lecka, played by the famous Pol ish actress, Beata Tyszkiewicz. Plot: As a descendant of an impoveris hed Polish noble f amily, youn g Wokulski is f orced to wor k as a waiter at Hopf er's, a Warsaw resta urant, while dreaming of a life in scienc e. After taking part in the failed 1863 Uprising agains t Tsarist Russia, he is sentenced t o exile in Siberia . On ev entual retu rn to War saw, he becomes a salesman at Mincel 39;s haberdash ery. Marryin g the late o wner's widow (who ev entually di es), he come s into money and use s it to set up a pa rtnership with a Russi an merc hant he h ad met while in exile. The t wo merchant s go to Bulg aria during the Russo-Tu rkish War of 1877-78, and Wokuls ki makes a fortu ne su pplying the Russ ian Army. The enterpr ising Wokuls ki now proves a r omantic at heart, falling in love wit h Izabela, daughter of the v acuous, b ankrup t aristocrat, Tomasz Łęck i. In his quest to win Izabela, Wokulski begins fr equenting theatre s and aristocratic salo ns; and to help her financially distressed father, founds a company an d sets the aristoc rats up as s hareholders in his business.T he i ndolence o f th ese ari stocrats, w ho secure with their pensions, are to o lazy to undertake new b usiness risks, frus trates Wokulski. His ability to make money is respected but hi s lack of family and social ra nk is condescended to. Because of his "help&q uot; (in secret) to Izabela';s impecunious but influential fa ther, the girl bec omes aware of his affection.
