When they next meet at a party, B ob and Mic deny that they have any feelings for one a nother - a declaration that soon leads to traged y... Marcel Carné is widely regarded as one of the st andard bearers o f Fr ench quality ci nema of the 1930s and 1940s, respon sible for such masterpiec es as Quai des brumes (193 8) and Les Enfants du Paradi s (1945). How ironic then that, in 1958, towards the end of his film-making career, he should make a film which dared to portray the atti tudes and behav iour of the 1950s yo uth, in a way that effectively ca ptures th e mood and s entiment of the time. Les Tricheurs was a hugely contro versial film, not least beca use of its blatant depic tion of adolescent free -love, and wa s even banned in some regions of F rance. It also r eceived some intensel y unfavourable revi ews, most notably fr om the young h otheads on the Cahiers du cinéma su ch as Fr ançois Truffaut w ho cited this film a s a prime example of the decline of French cin ema in to mediocrity. In spite of all this negative press, the film proved to be an ast onishing commercial success, attr acti ng five mill ion cinema-goer s, and wa s awarded the Gran d Prix du Cinéma français in 1958. Wh ilst L es Tricheurs is not as flawless as Carné' ;s earlier masterp ieces , it is nonetheless a significa nt work, having the p ower to both shock and move i ts aud ience, wh ilst having great entertainment value. It evo kes the mood of its ti me in a way that f ew French fil ms of this period did, de picting young peo ple as pleas ure-seekin g rebels, reject ing the austerity and dis cipline of t he previous generatio n whilst pursuing a life without cares, responsi bilit ies or love. Simil aritie s with James Dean' ;s films of the 195 0s (most notably Rebel without a Cause) ar e apparent, althoug h Ca rné39;s treatm ent of yo ung people is far more abs trac t - in his film they merely symbolise a world tha t has lost its way, more or less vic tims o f po st-war prosperity. Altho ugh the you ng people i n Les Trich eurs lac k the authenticity to be totally credible, the fi lm does make an important, and indeed q uite distu rbing point, about where the permissive socie ty may be heading. Much of the pl easu re of th e film is i n the perf ormances fro m its four le ad actors, Jac ques Charrier, Pascal e Pe tit, Laure nt Terzieff and Andréa Parisy, alth ough only T erzieff i s really conv incing in his role. M arcel Carné originally con sidered Alain Delon and Jean-Paul B elmondo for th e parts of Bob and Ala in respectively, befor e opting for Ch arrier and Terzieff . As a consolation, Carné offered Belmondo a smaller part in the film - alas too small for the actor to be noticed by the public. Belmondo 9;s br eakthrough had to wait unt il the fol lowing year when he starred in Jean-Luc God ard's revo lutionary A bout de souffle, a film which offers a very di fferent perspecti ve of the youth generation.
