《不安分的年輕人們》是由知名导演馬塞爾·卡爾內 执导的一部劇情片,帕斯卡爾·普缇 安德麗·帕裏西 雅克·夏裏爾 洛朗 等倾情出演,该片讲述了: M iddle class student Bob Letellier enters a n ew wor ld when he meets Alain, a free-thinking rebe l who, along with his group of young Pari sians, ha s opted for a li fe of ins tant gratif ication instead of work and c ommit ment. At a party , Bob meets a young woman, Mic, who appears to b e just as c arefree and cynical as Alain. Mic 's only dr eam is to own a lu xury car, and wit h Bob 's help, she manages t o find the money to but i t. Mic39;s f riend Clo discover s she is pregnant and, not k nowing who the father is, she asks B ob to marry her. When t hey next meet at a party, Bob and Mic deny that they have any f eelings for one another - a declaration that so on leads to tragedy... Marcel Carné is w idely regarded as one of t he standard bearers of French qual ity cinem a of the 1930s and 1940s, respo nsible for such masterpiec es as Qua i des b rumes (1938) and Les Enfants du Paradis (1945). How ironic then that, in 1958, towards the end of his film-m aking career, he s hould make a film w hich dared to portray the attit udes and behaviour of the 1950s youth, i n a way that eff ecti vely cap tures the mood and s entiment of the tim e. Les Tricheurs was a hugely cont rove rsial fi lm, not least because of its blatant de piction of adolescent free-love, and was eve n ban ned in some regio ns of France. It also re ceived s ome inte nsely unfavo urable reviews, most no tably from the yo ung hotheads o n the Cahiers du ci néma such as Françoi s Truffaut who cited this film as a pr ime example of th e decline of French cinem a into med iocrity. In s pite of all this negative press, th e film proved to b e an astonishing commercial success, att racting five million cinema-go ers, and was awarded t he Grand Prix d u Cinéma fr ançais in 1958. Whilst Les Tricheurs is not as flawless as Carné39;s earlier masterpie ces, it is none theless a sig nificant work, having the power to both shock and mo ve its audien ce, whilst having great e ntertainmen t value . It evok es the mood of i ts time in a w ay that few Fr ench films of this period did, depicting young people as pleasure-seeking rebels, rejec ting the austerity and discipl ine of the previous generation whils t pursui ng a life without car es, re sponsibilities or love. Similarities with James Dean's films of t he 1950s (most notably Rebel without a Cau se) are a pparent, a lthough Carn é's treatment of y oung people is far more abs tract - in his film they merely symbolise a world that has lost i ts way, mor e or less victims of post-war prosperi ty. Although the you ng peopl e in Les Tricheurs la ck t he authentic ity to be totally cr edible, the film does make an import ant, and indeed qu ite dis turbi ng point, about where the pe rmiss ive society may be heading. Much of the pleasu re of the film is in th e perf orma nces from its fou r lead actors, Jacques Charrier, Pascale Petit, Laur ent Terzieff and André a Parisy, al though on ly Terzieff is reall y convincing i n his rol e. Marcel Carné originally considered Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo f or the par ts of Bob and Alain r espec tively, before opting for Charrier and Terzieff. As a consolation, Carné offe red Belmondo a smaller part in the film - alas too s mall f or the actor to be noticed by the public. Belmo ndo's breakth rough had to wait until the following year when he starred in Jean-Luc Godard9;s r evolutionary A bout de souffle, a film w hich o ffers a very dif ferent perspective of the you th generation.
