The Dirk Ge ntly books have formed th e basis of a pl ay and a BBC Radio 4 series but have nev er before been filmed fo r TV. Adams's agent, Ed Victor, sai d: &q uot;For all the ye ars I represented the late, gr eat Douglas Adams, the most substantial frustration for both o f us was that we coul dn9;t get films made either of Hitchhiker or D irk. " Douglas once said, memo rably, that 'getting a film mad e in Hollywood wa s like trying to cook a steak by having a bunch o f people com e into the room and brea the on it' . Well, we did even tually ge t a film made in Hollywood of Hitchhiker a nd, tragically, Douglas didn' t live to see it. Nor will he see this adaptatio n of Dir k – but it's worth beari ng in mind that Douglas always thought Dirk would make a bett er film than Hitchhiker and I f eel sure that t his ne w TV drama with a terrific script by Howard O verman will prove his point." Shooting begins thi s week in Bristol on the 60-minute drama, whic h is being ma de by ITV Studios in association with t he Welded Tandem Pic ture Company.
