He is desc ribed as & #39;lazy, un tidy, dism issive and unreliable'. I&# 39;ve absolu tely no i dea why they thought I' ;d be righ t for the role.& quot; The Dirk Gently books have forme d the b asis of a play and a BBC Radio 4 series but have never before been filmed for TV. Well, we did eventually get a film made in Hollyw ood of Hi tchhiker and , tragically , Doug las didn't live t o see it . Nor will he see this adaptation of Dirk – but it 's worth beari ng in mind that Douglas always thought Dirk wo uld make a better f ilm than Hit chhiker and I fe el sure that this new TV drama with a terrific script by Howard Overman will prove his poin t." Shoo ting begins this week in Bristo l on the 60-minute dr ama, which is being made by ITV Stu dios in asso ciation with the Welded Tandem P icture Company .
