Adapted from the 1928 auto biographi cal nove l by Jean Rhys, Quartet is the story of a love quadrangle between a com plicated young W est Indi an woman named Marya (played by Isa belle Adjani), her husban d Stefan (Anthon y Higgins), a manipulat ive English art patron named Heidler (Alan Bates ), an d his pai nter wife Loi s (Maggie Smith). T he film is set in the Golden Age of Paris, Hemingway 39;s "moveable fea st" of cafe cultu re and extravagant nigh tlife, gl itter and lit erati: yet underneath is the outlin e of something siniste r beneath th e polished brasses and brasserie s. When Marya's husband is put in a Paris pri son on charges of selli ng stolen art works, she i s left indigent and i s taken in by Heidle r and his wife : the predatory Englishman (whose chara cter Rhys b ases on t he novelist Ford Madox Ford) is quick to take adva ntage of the new l iving arrangement, an d Marya finds her self in a stranglehold between husban d and wife. Lovers alternat ely gravitate tow ard and are r epelled by each othe r, now prof essing their love, now con fessing thei r brutal indiffer ence -- all the wh ile keeping up appeara nces. The film e xplores the vast territory bet ween the "nice" ; and the "good,& quot; between outward refinement and inner darkness: after one violent episode, Lois as ks Marya n ot to speak of it to the Par is crowd. & quot;Is tha t all you 9;re worried about?" dema nds an out raged Mar ya. "Yes," Lois replies with icy can dor, &quo t;as a matter of fact." Adjani won the Best Act ress awar d at Cannes for her performances in Quart et: he r Marya is a volatile compound of French s choolgirl and sco rned mis tress, veeri ng between tremulous joy and hysterica l outburst. Smi th shine s in one of her m ost memorable roles : she imbu es Lois with a Katherine-of-A ragon i mpoten t rage, as humiliated as she is power less i n the face of her husband's choices. Her interactions with Bates are sc enes from a marri age th at has move d from disillusionment to pale acceptan ce. Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and Jam es Ivory';s screenplay uses Rhys's novel as a foun dation fro m which it c onstructs a world tha t is both true to the novel and dis tinctive in its own right, painting a society that has lost its inhib itions and ina dverten tly lost its soul. We are take n to mirrored c afes, then move throug h the looki ng glass: Marya, in one sce ne, is of fered a job as a model and then finds hers elf in a sado masochistic pornographer's s tudio. The film, as photogra phed by Pierre Lhomme, cre ates t horoughly cine matic moments that Rhy9;s novel c ould not have attempted: in one of the Ivor y' ;s most memorable scene s, a black Americ an chante use (extraordinarily played by Arm elia McQueen) enterta ins Pa risian pat rons with a big and brassy ja zz song, neithe r subt le nor elegant. Ivory keeps t he ca mera on the sing er' ;s act: th ere is something in her unguarded smile that makes the dan ger ben eath Montparnasse manners seem more acute. 陆灵蹊眨了眨眼,很 干脆地把当初在奇怪 岛石殿抢来的黑漆漆 大鼎放到院中,“老祖,您看它到仙级了吗?我筑基中期 就得到它了,一 直想打开它,可是,结丹的时候打不开,元婴以后还是打不开。到了化神,我一直忙,就把它忘了,您帮我瞅瞅,若是能用您就 用。”
