When Marya's husband is put in a Paris prison on charges of selling stole n art works, she is left indigent and is take n in by H eidler a nd his wife: the predatory Englishman (whose characte r Rhys bases on th e novelist For d Madox Ford) is quick to take a dvantage of th e new living arrangement, and Marya finds herself in a stra nglehold between husb and an d wife. Her interactions wi th Bates a re scen es from a marriage that has moved from disillusio nment to pal e accep tance. Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and James Ivory39;s screenplay uses Rhys's n ovel as a foundation from which it constr ucts a world that is both true to the novel and distinctive in its own right, painting a society that has lost its inh ibitions and inadvertently lost i ts soul. We a re taken to mirro red caf es, then move through the lo oking glass: Marya, in o ne scene, is offered a job as a model and then finds herself in a sado masochistic pornographer9;s studio. The film, as photographed b y Pi erre Lhomme, cre ates thoroughly ci nematic moments that Rhy39;s novel co uld not have attempted: in o ne of the Ivory39;s most memorable scenes, a black Ameri can chant euse (extraordinarily played by Armelia McQueen ) entertains Parisia n pa trons with a big and brassy ja zz song, neither subtle nor elegant.
