Adapted from the 19 28 autobiographic al novel by Jean Rhys, Quartet is the story of a lo ve quadrangl e between a complicat ed young West In dian woma n named Marya (played by Isab elle Adj ani), her husband Stefan (Anthony Higgins ), a man ipulativ e Englis h art patron named Heidler (Al an Bates), and his painter wif e Lois (Maggie Sm ith). The film is set in the Golden Age of Paris, Hemingway's "moveable feast" of cafe c ultu re and ex travagant nightlif e, glitter and lite rati: yet underneath is the outline o f something sinis ter be neath the polished brasses and br asse ries. Wh en Marya& #39;s husban d is put in a Paris pris on o n charges of sellin g stol en art wor ks, she is left indigent and is take n in by Heidler and his wife: the p reda tory English man (who se character Rhys bases on the novel ist Ford Madox Ford) is quick to take advantage o f the new living arrangement, and Marya finds herse lf in a stranglehol d between husb and and wife . Lovers al ternately gr avitate toward and are repelled by each othe r, now profe ssing their love, now c onfes sing their brutal indiffere nce -- all the while keep ing up appearances . The film explores the vast terr itory bet ween the "n ice" and the "good," between outward refi nement and inner darkness: after one vio lent episode, Lois asks Mar ya not to speak of it to the Paris crowd. "Is th at all you're w orried abou t?&q uot; dema nds an outrage d Marya. & quot;Yes ," Lois replies wi th icy candor, "a s a matte r of fact." Ad jani won the Bes t Actress a ward at Ca nnes for her performances in Q uartet: her Marya is a volatile compo und of French schoolgirl and scorned mistre ss, veeri ng be tween t remulo us joy and hysterical outburst. Smith shi nes in one of her most memo rable roles: she imbues Lo is with a Katherine-of-Aragon impotent rag e, as humiliated a s she is powerless in the face of her husband9;s choices. He r inter actions with Bates are scenes from a marriage that has moved from disillusionment to pale acceptan ce. Ruth Prawer Jh abvala and Ja mes Ivory 39;s screenplay uses R hys' ;s novel a s a foundation from which it constructs a world that is both true to the n ovel and distin ctive in its own right, paintin g a s ociet y that has lost its inhib itions an d inadverte ntly los t it s soul. We are taken to mirror ed ca fes, then move through the looking glass : Marya, in one scene, is offe red a job as a model and then finds herself in a s adom asochistic pornographer 9;s studio. The f ilm, as phot ographe d by Pierre Lhomme, creates thoroughly cinematic moments that Rh y's novel could not have attempted: in one of the Ivor y's most memora ble scenes, a bla ck American chanteuse (extraordinarily played by Armelia McQueen) entertains Parisian patrons with a big a nd brassy jazz s ong, neither subtle nor el egant. Ivory ke eps the camera on t he singer's act: ther e is somethi ng in her unguarded smile tha t makes the danger beneath Mon tpar nasse manners seem m ore acute.
