Adapted f rom the 1928 auto biographi cal novel by Jean Rhy s, Quartet is th e story of a love quadran gle betw een a com plic ated yo ung West Indian wo man named Marya (played by I sabelle Adjani), her husba nd Stefan ( Antho ny Higgins), a m anip ulative English art pa tron na med Heidler (Alan Bates), and his painter w ife Lois (Maggie S mith). The f ilm is set i n the Golden Age of Paris, Hemin gway's "mo veable fea st" of cafe cult ure and extravagant n ightlife, glitter and lit erati: yet underneath is the outline of something sinister ben eath the polished brasses and brasseries. W hen Marya 39;s husban d is put in a Par is prison on charges of selling sto len art w orks, she is left indigent and is taken in by Heidl er an d his wife: the predato ry En glishman (whose character Rhys bases o n the noveli st Ford Madox Ford) is quick to take advantage of the new living arrangement, and Marya finds herself in a s tran glehold bet ween hu sband and wife. Lover s alternately gravitate toward an d are repelled by each other, now prof essing th eir love, no w confessing their brut al indif ference -- all t he while keeping up appearances. The film explores the vast terri tory betwee n the "nice&q uot; and the "good," between outwa rd refinement and inner darkness: aft er one violent episode, Lois asks Marya not to speak o f it to the Paris crowd. "I s that all you're worried about?" demands an outraged Marya. " ;Yes,&q uot; Lois rep lies with icy cando r, "as a matter of fact.&qu ot; Adjani won the Best Actress a ward at Cannes for her p erformances in Quartet: her Marya is a volatile compound of Fren ch schoolgirl and scorn ed mistress, veering betwee n tr emulous joy and hysterical outburst. Smith shi nes in o ne of he r most memo rable r oles: she imbues Lois with a Katherin e-of-Ara gon impotent rage , as humilia ted as she is powerl ess in the face of her husband9;s choices. Her interactions with Bates are scene s from a marriage t hat has mov ed from dis illusionmen t to pale acceptanc e. R uth Prawer Jhabvala and James Iv ory's screenplay uses Rhys';s novel as a found ation from which it con struct s a world that is both t rue to the n ovel and distinctiv e in its own right, painting a society that has lost its in hibiti ons and i nadvertentl y lost its s oul. We a re taken to mirrored cafes, then move through the l ooking glass : Mary a, in one scene, is offered a job as a m odel and then finds herself i n a sad omasochistic pornographer 39;s st udio. The film, as photographed by Pierre L homme, creates thor oughly cinematic moments that Rh y';s novel could not have attempte d: in one of the Ivory' s most memorable scenes, a bl ack America n chant euse (ex traordina rily played by Armelia McQueen) entertains P arisian patrons w ith a big and brassy jazz so ng, neither subtle nor elegant. Ivory keep s the cam era on the s inger 's act : there is something in her unguarded smi le t hat makes the danger beneath Montparnasse manners seem more acute. 这一次,她直接从袖 中暗袋里摸出一个大型储物袋,“知道我要来见您,不仅爷爷让我给 您带了好些黄金谷做成的米饭和各类点心,就是我师父师叔他们,都逼着宗里的大师父,给您弄了好些 好吃的,我师姐采薇还把她弄的极品花茶给我了。”
