Ad apted from the 1 928 autobiographical novel by Jean Rhys, Quartet is the story of a love quadrangle between a complic ated young West Indian woman named Marya (played by Isabelle Adjani), h er husband Stef an (An thony Higgins), a manipulative English art p atron named Heidler (Alan Bates), and h is paint er wife Loi s (Mag gie S mith). T he film is s et in the Golden Ag e of Paris, Hemi ngway';s " moveable feast" of cafe cultur e and extravagant nightlife , glitter and li terati: yet u nderneath is the outline of s omet hing siniste r beneath th e polished brasses and brasseries. When Marya';s husband is put in a Paris pris on on charges o f sell ing stolen art works, she is le ft indigent and is tak en in by H eidler and his wife: the pred atory Eng lishman (whose character Rhys bases on the novelist F ord Ma dox Ford) is quick t o take adv antage of the new living arran gement, and Marya finds herself in a stranglehold betwe en husband and wife . Lovers alternately gravitate to ward and are repelled by each other, now profess ing their love, now confes sing their bru tal indiffere nce - - all the while keepin g up appearanc es. The film explores the va st territory betwe en the " ;nice&qu ot; and the &qu ot;good,&quo t; betwee n ou tward refin emen t and inne r darkness: after one violent episode, Lois asks Marya not to speak of it to th e Pari s crowd. "Is that all yo u're worried about? " demands an outr aged M arya. "Yes, " Lois rep lies with ic y candor, &quo t;as a matter of fact.& quot; Adjani won the Best Actress award at Cannes for her performances in Quartet : her Marya is a volatile com pound of French scho olgir l and scor ned mistress , veering between tremulo us j oy and hysterical outburst. Smith shines in one of her most memorab le rol es: she imbues Lois with a K atherine-of-Aragon impoten t rage, as humiliated as s he is pow erless in the face of h er husban d' ;s choices. Her interactions with Ba tes are sc enes from a marri age that has moved from disillusionment to pale acceptance. Ruth Prawer Jhabvala and James I vory's screenplay uses Rhys's n ovel as a foundation from which it con structs a worl d that is both true to the novel and di stinc tive in its own right, pain ting a societ y that has l ost its inh ibitions and inadvertently lost its soul. We are take n to mirrored ca fes, then move th roug h the l ooking g lass: Ma rya, in one scene , is of fered a job as a mode l and then finds herself in a sadomas ochistic pornographer's studio. The film , as photographe d by Pierre Lh omme, creates thoroug hly cinemat ic moments that Rh y' ;s novel could not have attemp ted: i n on e of the Ivory's most memorable sc enes , a b lack American chanteuse ( extrao rdinarily played by Arm elia McQueen) entertains Parisia n patrons with a big and b rassy jazz song, neith er subtle nor elegant. Ivory k eeps the camera on the singer9;s act: there is something in her unguarded smile tha t ma kes the danger bene ath Montparnasse manners seem more acute. 好半晌 ,他才放下玉简抬头 看向陆灵蹊,“有这事。”他站起来,走向另一边的玉架,从上面拿了一枚蓝玉制成的玉佩,“当初主人觉得,佐蒙人不会放过 天渊七界飞升的一切 生灵,但是人 族寿元就那么多,人心复杂,他 没办法因势力导,但是妖族却可以。”
